Wildcats offense explodes in wins over Colby and Bowdoin

Sophomore Megan Lindenfelser and first year Sammie Galvez' home runs ignited the Wildcat offense against Colby and Bowdoin.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FLA. – After two low scoring games Sunday, the offense for the St. Catherine University softball team came to life on their second day at the National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Wildcats scored a combined 21 runs on Monday, defeating Colby College 12-6 and Bowdoin College 9-0 to stay undefeated in the 2016 season.

St. Kate's looked to pick up right where they left off in their opening nightcap against Colby. The Wildcats managed one base runner in the top of the first, but were unable to advance the runner. In fact, it was the Mules who scored first. First baseman Tori Sansone scored from third on a wild pitch by St. Kate's starter Kailee Berquam (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) to put Colby up 1-0 after the first inning of play.

The Mules lead didn't last very long. First year Sammie Galvez (Gilbert, Ariz./ Williams Field) hit a home run on the first pitch she saw in the top of the second, tying the game at one. Her home run seemed to spark the Wildcat offense. St. Kate's went on to score eight unanswered runs in the top of the third inning to take a 9-1 lead. However, Colby scored three runs in the third and one in the fourth to cut the Wildcats lead to 9-5. St. Kate's offense stepped up to the plate in a big way in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to boost their lead to 12-5.

In the bottom of the same inning, the Mules scored three runs, prompting a Wildcat pitching change. Sophomore ace Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) relieved Berquam in the bottom of the sixth and faced five batters in her one and two-thirds inning of work, and she sent all five of them packing.

Offense, defense, and pitching also came together for St. Kate's in their second game of the evening against Bowdoin College. After Flugstad sent the top three Polar Bears down in order to start the game, the Wildcats scored four quick runs in the bottom of the first. Senior shortstop Robyn Rohr (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North) led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Bowdoin catcher. With Rohr and Claire Woebke (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) on the bases, first baseman Ashley Sis (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) hit an RBI double, scoring Rohr from second and advancing Woebke to third. The next batter, sophomore centerfielder Megan Lindenfelser, (Nowthen, Minn. / Anoka) hit a 3-run homerun to make it a 4-0 ballgame after just the first inning.

The Wildcats went on to score two more runs in the second and third innings and one run in the fourth, while Flugstad kept the Polar Bear offense at bay. The sophomore pitched her third complete game shutout of the season, compiling no walks and 10 strikeouts in five innings of work. She gave up just four hits and only allowed one Bowdoin base runner to advance past second base.

Eight of the St. Kate's starters recorded a hit in one of the two victories. Flugstad led the team against Colby, going 3-4 with one run and one RBI, while Rohr and Sis were both 2-4 with two runs. Galvez and outfielder Anna Hinderaker (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) were 2-3 against Bowdoin while Lindenfelser went 1-2 with 3 RBIs.
The Wildcats hope to keep things rolling, as they return to Legends Field for two more games early tomorrow morning. St. Kate's will open their Tuesday with a single game against Greenville College at 9 a.m. eastern time. Afterwards, they will take on the Salve Regina Seahawks at 11 a.m.
