Volleyball looks for first MIAC win against Saint Ben's

ST. PAUL, MINN. – It's been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for the St. Catherine University volleyball team in recent weeks. While the Wildcats have been competitive in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matches, taking at least a set from the top teams in the conference, they are still looking for their first conference win of the season.

This weekend, St. Kate's has a chance to grab that first win as it hosts the College of Saint Benedict at 3 p.m. in the Butler Center Gym. The Wildcats and Blazers played a memorable match last season, as St. Kate's upset then No. 22 Saint Ben's 3-2 (25-19, 25-21, 14-25, 15-25, 15-13) in a five set thriller.

The Blazers may not be nationally ranked this season, but they do have a very impressive resume, with wins over No. 4 Emory and No. 18 Bethel. They were also selected to finish in the top half of the MIAC and qualify for the conference postseason tournament. The upstart Wildcats are looking to make the MIAC Volleyball Tournament for the first time since 2010 and need a win to keep their hopes alive.

With plenty at stake, here are the five things to know before this weekend's match:

11 – St. Kate's volleyball team has been spectacular in nonconference games this season. All 11 of the Wildcats wins this season have been against nonconference opponents, and the team has a .647 win percentage against teams not from the MIAC.

841 – Currently, St. Kate's is second in the MIAC in assists, with 841 split between three setters. Johna Radke (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego) leads the team with 286 assists this season with Larissa Kisch (Oakdale, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) and Emily Neumann (Duluth, Minn. / Hermantown) not far behind. Kisch is second on the team with 239 assists and Neumann has 230 this season.

1410 – While the Wildcats are second in the league in assists, they lead the conference in total digs. St. Kate's has racked up 1410 digs this season, 537 of which belong to Shanee Herd (Alexandria , Minn. / Jefferson). Herd leads the MIAC in both digs and digs per set (6.39) and is ranked in the top-5 in the nation in both categories.

130 – The Wildcats are also pretty good at serving. St. Kate's leads the MIAC in service aces this season with 130 total and is averaging 1.55 aces per set.

10 Libby Kreuser (White Bear Lake, Minn. / Totino-Grace) averages .71 blocks per set this season, which is tied for tenth in the MIAC. She ranks fifth in the conference in total blocks (53) while teammate Hannah Flatness (Elk Mound, Wis. / Elk Mound) is tied for 11th in total blocks with 42.

Bonus number:

6 – The Wildcats have a 6-3 record at home this season. However, they have a 5-8 record away from the Butler Center.
