Volleyball to honor seniors in final home match

ST. PAUL, MINN. – As October comes to an end, so too does the St. Catherine University volleyball season. Although the Wildcats have four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matches remaining on the schedule, only one of those matches will be played in the Butler Center Gym.

St. Kate's will play its final home match of the 2016 season on Wednesday, as the Wildcats take on Macalester College at 7 p.m. It will be a special night for St. Kate's as the team honors seniors Shanee Herd (Alexandria, Minn. / Jefferson) and Abby Palmer (Pequot Lakes, Minn. / Pequot Lakes) and looks for its first win in conference play.

In addition to honoring the seniors, the Wildcats match versus Macalester will also serve as the kick off to Wildcat Weekend. Students who attend the match can earn a variety of prizes, including a Fitbit, and a St. Kate's Athletics t-shirt if they attend both the home volleyball match and soccer's Saturday game.

Fans can also watch the match live online via either live stats or video. Score updates will also be made in between sets on St. Kate's Athletics official Twitter account (@stkateswildcats).

Without further ado, here is a special senior edition of the numbers to know before first serve:

769 – Since their first year with the Wildcats, Herd and Palmer have had a significant impact on the team, especially on defense. The two seniors have played a combined 769 sets in 222 matches over four seasons, accumulating 3263 digs. They've also made an impact offensively, with 166 service aces, 591 kills, and 141 assists in four years.

No. 1 – Herd's name will be cemented in the record book for years to come since she's already broke two school records this season. In the Wildcats opening tournament in September, the senior libero set the school record for services aces in the single match (10) and later in October, broke Nicole Neumann's nine-year old school record for career digs. With four matches reaming, Herd has 2167 career digs to her name, smashing Neumann's long standing record of 2007. Herd also was the first player from St. Kate's to earn All-MIAC honors since 2012.

4 – Palmer's been no slouch either, as her name will also be in the Wildcats record books for a long time. Palmer is No. 5 all-time in career-blocks (184), No. 6 all-time in career digs (1096) and career attack attempts (2116), and No. 8 all-time in career kills (580).

55 – Herd and Palmer have accounted for 55% of St. Kate's digs this season. This season Herd and Palmer have racked up 932 digs combined, making them one of the best back-row tandems in the MIAC in 2016.

10 – Both seniors rank in the top-10 in the MIAC in multiple statistical categories. Herd is currently the top libero in the conference, as her 637 digs and 6.36 digs/set average top the statistical leader board. Palmer isn't far behind her teammate. She ranks as one of the top-15 players in the MIAC in digs (295) and service aces (28).

BONUS NUMBERS

2 – For the past two seasons, Herd had not only been a statistical leader in the MIAC. She's also found herself near the top of the NCAA and Division III leaderboards. Last season, Herd ranked in the top-10 in Division III in both digs and digs/set. This season, she's been even better. Currently, Herd is No. 2 in the country in digs (637) and No. 8 in digs/set average (6.37).

8 – Palmer has led the team in kills in eight matches this season, including two 18 kill performances against Central College and Martin Luther College.
