Box ScoreThe St. Catherine University tennis team rebounded from a tough streatch in conference play with a convincing win over Southwestern University to open its spring break trip. Thanks to another solid performance across the lineup, the Wildcats were able to score another win with a 6-3 decision over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Tuesday afternoon in Belton, Texas.
The Wildcats opened up with a 2-1 advantage at doubles as both the No. 1 pair of
Kylie Ketcho (Eden Prairie, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) and
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) and the No. 3 pair of
Maria Koval (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) and
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) scored 8-2 wins. The No. 2 pair of Angie Lroenzen (Mitchell, S.D./Mitchell) and
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn./Waseca) narrowly lost 8-6 to Angelie Juaneza and Haley Hicks.
Salo scored a solid 6-0, 6-2 win over Juaneza at the No. 2 spot, while Knoll got back on the winning track with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sarah Sedory at the No. 4 position.
Lorenzen battled for a strong 7-5, 6-4 win over Hicks at the No. 5 position, while
Jessica Duda (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) fought for the final Wildcat point at the No. 6 spot. After winning the first set 6-2 against Paola Nunez, Duda fell 6-3 in the second before taking the third-set tiebreaker 10-4.
At the top spot in singles, Koval suffered a tough 6-2, 6-0 loss to Hannah Warren who ranks 22nd individually in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Region. Ketcho ended her four-match winning streak with a three-set loss to Elizabeth Ostroff at No. 3 singles. Ketcho took the first set commandingly 6-1 before falling 6-3 in the second and 10-6 in the tiebreaker.
The Wildcats return to the Midwest to participate in the Midwest Invitational Friday and Saturday in Madison, Wisconsin.
