Box ScoreAfter a weekend of tough back-to-back Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) competition, the St. Catherine University tennis teeam hoped it could use that momentum as it faced another perennial powerhouse squad in Gustavus Adolphus College. Unfortunately, the Wildcats gave the Gusties all they could handle in a 7-2 loss Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minnesota.
Despite solid doubles play all season, the Wildcats scored just one win at the No. 1 position as
Kylie Ketcho (Eden Prairie, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) and
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) battled Sidney Dirks and Laurel Kresbach for a narrow 8-6 win.
Maria Koval (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) and
Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D./Mitchell) fell 8-4 at the No. 2 spot, while
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn./Waseca) and
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) fell 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Down 2-1 after doubles, the Wildcats need strong performances at singles, but managed just one win from Ketcho who defeated Lizzy Stanzczyk at No. 3 singles. Ketcho dropped the first set 3-6, before rebounding for a strong 6-3 win in the second set. Then, she captured the win with a 10-4 decision in the third-set tiebreaker.
Koval fell to Michaela Schulz 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Salo was defeated by Kresbach 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. Dirks took down Knoll at No. 4 singles with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Lorenzen fell to Katie Aney 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Ally Baker scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sporer at the No. 6 singles position.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 5-3 on the season and 3-3 in MIAC play. The Wildcats return to action Sunday as they are scheduled to take on the University of St. Thomas at 4 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.
