Wildcats roll to 4-0 non-conference shutout of Bethany Lutheran

Coming off a narrow Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) loss Saturday, the St. Catherine University soccer team looked to rebound in a non-conference contest against Bethany Lutheran College before hitting the middle of the conference season. Thanks to a huge performance from Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif./San Jacinto), the Wildcats gained the confidence they needed in defeating the Vikings 4-0 Monday evening in Mankato, Minnesota.

The Wildcats controlled the entire game with a 25-2 advantage in shots, 11-1 lead in shots on goal and 19-0 difference in corner kicks.

The action began early for the Wildcats as Leyva wasted no time tallying her first of two goals in the game in the ninth minute on a set up from Anna Pedersen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) giving the Wildcats the early 1-0 lead.

Then, in the 23rd minute, Leyva extended the Wildcats lead scoring on a set up from Kelly Molitor (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South) to put the Wildcats up 2-0.

Less than six minutes later, the Wildcats found themselves up 3-0 when Ellen Kokes (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) recorded her third goal of the season off a corner kick assist from Allie Boucher (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater).

The Wildcats were silent for a majority of the second half until Brittany Kollman (Fergus Falls, Minn./Kennedy Secondary) found the net for the first time in her collegiate career on a set up from fellow rookie Molly Hayes (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) to extended the team lead to 4-0 in the 78th minute.

Shelby Fehringer (Andover, Minn./Andover) collected her first collegiate win in goal for the Wildcats making one save in nearly 70 minutes played, while Laken Muller (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) made her first appearance as a rookie in net. Leyva, Kokes and Kollman led the Wildcats offensively with two shots on goal each. Leyva now ranks second on the team in goals (5) and points (14).

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 5-4-1 on the season. They will host league-leading Augsburg College Wednesday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at St. Kate's in St. Paul.
