After a disappointing first day at the UW-Oshkosh tournament, the St. Catherine University volleyball team knew it had a huge challenge of facing two strong teams on day two of the tournament in hopes of earning a 2-2 weekend record. Fortunately, the Wildcat squad Head Coach
Corey Phelps had been waiting for to show up did with a 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 15-7) victory over a solid UW-Superior squad and a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) win over Martin Luther college Saturday in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
"We're definitely back on track," said Phelps. "We had solid performances in both match. In the first match, we were still working a few kinks out to get back into form. The Martin Luther match was how we expect to play moving forward.
Amber Zeiher (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) and
Megan Lindenfelser (Nowthen, Minn./Anoka) were awesome today.
Ashley Kahlow (
Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) and Karsee Knutson (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) did a fantastic job setting up the offense. Shanee Herd (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson) also came up big on a number of occasions."
In the five-set win over UW-Superior, Zeiher had a career-high 16 kills to lead the Wildcats offensively, and then backed up that performance with a team-best 10 kills against Martin Luther. She over .400 in both matches and contributed to nine blocks on the day from the middle. First-year Lindenfelser totaled 12 kills in both matches, had 31 digs and added four service aces to her impressive all-around performance.
Those two weren't the only hitters with huge contribution on the day. Alyssa Besch (Apply Valley, Minn./Eastview) continued to be a consistent presence for the Wildcats with 16 kills in the five-set thriller and added six more in the sweep of Martin Luther. She also helped on five of the team's 16 total blocks between the two matches.
Kahlow and Knutson set the Wildcats up for success with a combined 94 assists between the two victories. Kahlow tallied 34 assists and helped on defense with 16 digs, while Knutson was stellar with 47 assists and 21 digs. The pair of seniors also combined for four service aces.
Herd had one of her best days of the early season with 41 digs and two service aces, while Abigail Palmer (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) chipped in 21 between the two wins. Palmer also had 14 kills combined and a block assist.
With the wins, the Wildcats improve to 8-5 and match their eight-win season total from a year ago. Zoe Barr (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) was named to the all-tournament team Monday.
The Wildcats return to action for the first time against a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent this season Wednesday as they travel to take on Gustavus Adolphus College for a 7 p.m. contest in St. Peter, Minn.
