The St. Catherine University volleyball team has developed a pattern of opening tournament play this season with two straight-set wins on the opening day and had its sights set on making it three in a row at the UW-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic. However, the cards didn't seem to fall in favor of the Wildcats this week, though, as they fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-20) to Concordia University (WI) and 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-18) to host UW-Oshkosh Friday in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
In the opening match against Concordia (WI),
Abigail Palmer (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) and Maddy Mullins (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia) each collected six kills, while Alyssa Besch (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and Zoe Barr (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) had five each. Besch also added two blocks, two digs and an ace to her stat line.
Shelby Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake) had a team-high 11 digs, while Karsee Knutson (New London, Minn.) had eight and led the team with 19 assists and a service ace. Ashley Kahlow (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) also had 11 assists in the three-set loss to the Falcons. In the second match of the day against a UW-Oshkosh team that received votes in the latest national poll, the Wildcats were led by Besch and Palmer who collected six and five kills, respectively, and hit over .250 each. Besch also added a solo block to her stat line, while Palmer continued to help on defense with six digs.
Amber Zeiher (
Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) also added three kills and a two blocks.Shanee Herd (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson) led the Wildcats defensively with 19 digs, while Kahlow added nine. Kahlow also picked up 10 assists sharing setting duties with Knutson who tallied 12.
With the losses, the Wildcats fall to 6-5 on the season and return to action Saturday for day two of the UW-Oshkosh Tournament. They open play against UW-Superior at 12 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. match with Martin Luther College.
