Wildcats can't stop Blazers in MIAC doubleheader losses

Rachael Thompson hit a three-run home run in game two loss to the Blazers Sunday
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After two tough losses to Macalester College Friday, the St. Catherine University softball team hoped that it could pick up a few wins after a day off and the 2014 season coming to an end. Unfortunately, the Wildcats came up short twice in 9-1 and 9-3 loss to one of the most surprising teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) this season in the College of Saint Benedict Sunday at the Rosemount Irish Dome in Rosemount, Minn.

For the second MIAC series in a row, the Wildcats struggled to slow down their opponents at the plate as the Blazers tallied 24 hits in two games, while the Wildcats couldn't find a way to be effective at the plate as they compiled just 11 hits for four runs.

Kaitlyn Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) led the Wildcats on the day hitting going 2-for-4 with one run, while Rachael Thompson (St. Peter, Minn.) provided the most excitement on the day as she hit her first collegiate home run in game two to drive in all three Wildcat runs.

In the opening game, the Blazers chipped away at the plate scoring at least once in innings two, three and four before the Wildcats finally managed to get something going in the top of the sixth. Raven Baker (Minneapolis, Minn.) starte the inning off with one of her two hits on the day, before getting out on a fielder's choice to Alyssa Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.). She then scored the lone Wildcat run when Jessica Tyminski (Champlin, Minn.) hit a RBI double. That was all the Wildcats could come up with, though, as the Blazers scored three in the bottom of the inning to end the game on the run-rule.

In game two, the Blazers scored nine runs in the opening three innings before the Wildcats finally got to work in the fourth. Kaitlyn Luedtke opened up the inning with one of her two hits in the second game, before Tyminski picked up her second hit of the day on a single to left center. Thompson then came to bat and hit a three-run shot to send Kaitlyn Luedtke and pinch runner Felicia Hamman (Columbia Heights, Minn.) home. The Wildcats weren't able to add any additional runs, though, as they fell to 5-15 in the MIAC.

Both Alyssa Besch (Lakeville, Minn.) and Alyssa McKee (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) each picked up a hit on the day to add to the Wildcat offense.

The Wildcats are slated to close out the season against the University of Northwestern-St. Paul Wednesday for a senior day celebration at 4 p.m. at St. Kate's in St. Paul. The MIAC doubleheader against Concordia College has not yet been rescheduled.
