Box Score 2 After two postponements this week, the St. Catherine University softball team finally got the opportunity for some Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) competition against Saint Mary's Unviersity Friday.. Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't hold on to a 1-0 lead in dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker in eight innings during the series opener before falling 8-0 in five Friday afternoon in Winona, Minn.
In the opening game,
Lindsey Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) pictched six shutout innings and had allowed just four hits to the Cardinals before they found a way to force extra innings and pull away with the win. Klein allowed just six total hits to the Cardinals and struck out six batters in her seventh complete game of the season. Klein also picked up one of the Wildcats' seven hits in game one and one of just two team hits in the second game.
The Wildcats struck first in the opener during the top of the fifth innning.
Alyssa Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) opened up the inning with her second double of the season to put herself in scoring position. Then, two batters later, sister
Kaitlyn Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) picked up an RBI single to center field to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead they would keep until the seveth inning when the Cardinals tied it up to force extra innings. Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't generate any more scoring and allowed the Cardinals to comeback for the game one victory.
The Cardinals struck early in the second game picking up two runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to their sixth MIAC victory of the season.
Caitlin DeWitt (Stillwater, Minn.) picked up the only other Wildcat of the game in addition to Klein's and her second of the day to lead the team in hitting.
Alyssa Luedtke finished the day with one hit in just three at bats with a walk, double, a stolen base and the only run scored on the day.
Jessica Tyminski (Champlin, Minn.) also had a hit and walk in the doubleheader.
The Wildcats drop to 7-17 overall and 5-7 in MIAC play heading into Saturday's doubleheader with reigning MIAC champion University of St. Thomas at 1 p.m. in St. Paul.
