Box Score Heading into a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matchup with a Concordia College squad that has suffered just three conference losses all season, the odds weren't in favor of the St. Catherine University basketball team to pull off an upset victory. The Wildcats appeared they might come up with a come from behind win, though, as they matched Concordia in scoring in the second half and had three players score in double digits. But they just couldn't overcome a slow first half in falling 87-68 to the Cobbers Saturday afternoon in the
Butler Center.
After shooting just 35.7 percent in the first half, the Wildcats came to life in the second shooting 62.5 percent from the field and 6-of-10 from 3-point range. The Wildcats limited themselves to just 11 turnovers – the lowest team total in a single game this season – and picked up a season high 13 steals on the Cobbers' 16 turnovers. The Wildcats again stuggled from the free throw line, though, and were out-rebounded by the tall Cobbers 41-21.
In the first-half, the Wildcats kept their opponent close until the 9:06 mark when the Cobbers went on a 19-3 run and pushed their lead to 23 points with just under four minutes to play. After being down 42-23 at half time, the Wildcats matched Concordia 45-45 in the second , but it wasn't enough as the Cobbers picked up their 17th MIAC win of the year.
LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn.) was nearly unstoppable for the Wildcats as she scored a game and career-high 26 points and had a team-high five rebounds. Her impressive scoring performance was the third time this season she has scored 20 or more. Her game-high seven steals was also the most in a single game for the first-year, as was her team-best five assists. Holt also shot an impressive 50 percent from the field.
Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) matched her season-best scoring performance with 14 points as she went 6-of-13 from the field, while
Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) scored in double-digits for the seocnd time in as many games. The sophomore scored 10 points, shot 66 percent from the field and made 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. She also recorded three assists and two rebounds.
Kennedy Jennings (Des Moines, Iowa) was 2-of-3 from the field and scored nine points to help the Wildcats offensively, while
Sarah Manning (Page, Ariz.) pulled in four boards and had three assists.
The Cobbers had five players reach double-digits in scoring with Alley Fisher leading the way with 19 points. She drained five of the Cobebrs' 12 baskets from 3-point range, while Alexandra Lippert had 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday against No.17 Saint Mary's University for their first of a three-game road stretch. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the SMU gym in Winona, Minn.
