Holt's 22 points not enough in 66-58 loss to Hamline

LaShay Holt scored a career-high 22 points in the Wildcats narrow loss to Hamline Monday
Box Score The St. Catherine University basketball team had a golden opportunity to come up with a much-needed Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win against a Hamline University squad that boasted an identical 2-10 MIAC record. Despite a 22-point performance from LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn.), the Wildcats couldn't find an answer to slow down the league's top scorer in Jordan Sammons and suffered a 66-58 loss Monday evening at the Butler Center in St. Paul. 

Sammons picked up a double-double for the Pipers as she had a game-high 24 points and 14 rebounds. She was 10-of-18 from the field, 2-for-5 from the arc and had a team-high three steals and three assists.

In a back and forth game that saw six lead changes, the Wildcats appeared they might be able to pull off a win thanks to an impressive shooting night where the team matched the Pipers shooting a nearly identical 41.5 percent from the floor and were 7-of-15 from 3-point range. The two teams were even in rebounding with 37 a side and equaled in turnovers with 19 each. 

The difference in the game – the Pipers shot 72.7 percent from the charity stripe as opposed to just 33.3 percent free throw shooting from the Wildcats. 

Holt had another career night and missed out on a double-double with her team-high nine rebounds. The first-year was an impressive 10-of-20 from the field and 2-for-5 from 3-point range. She also added two steals and an assist. Holt is now averaging 12.4 points per game which ranks 13th in the MIAC, while her 6.4 rebounds per game ranks 11th. 

Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) also had a career-best night off the bench with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and a block. The sophomore was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and shot 50 percent from the field. 

Kennedy Jennings (Des Moines, Iowa) and Liz Ellens (Sauk Centre, Minn.) each came off the bench to score five points. Jennings was 2-for-3 from the field with four rebounds, while Ellens didn't miss and added a rebound and a block. Fellow first-year Abby Torgerson (Anoka, Minn.) had four points, five rebounds and led the team in steals (3) and assists (4). 

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 2-11 in the MIAC and will look again for another win Wednesday against a Carleton College squad that boasts an identical conference record. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
