Wildcats' 12 3-pointers not enough in MIAC loss to Gustavus

Abby Torgerson had a career-best ... points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the loss to Guastavus
Box Score Coming off a huge Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win over Macalester College on Saturday, the St. Catherine University basketball team hoped it could find a way to start a winning streak against a Gustavus Adolphus College squad that has won just three conference games so far this season. Despite 12 made 3-pointers for the Wildcats, the Gusties used their own 50 percent shooting performance to hand the Wildcats a 77-67 loss Monday night at Gus Young Court in St. Peter, Minn.

The Wildcats posted their best shooting percentage of the season shooting 54.2 from the field and an unbelievable 54.5 percent from beyond the arc. Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't overcome 21 turnovers that allowed the Gusties to pull away early in the second half – despite an attempt at a Wildcat comeback that saw a 12-0 run over a three-minute span to pull within nine of the Gusties.

The Gusties also held a 34-22 rebounding advantage including 16 offensive rebounds that allowed the Gusties 20 second-chance points. The Wildcats also failed to convert on free throw opportunites as they went just 3-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Abby Torgerson (Anoka, Minn.) had a career-night as she led the Wildcats' sharp shooting from 3-point range. The first-year was one of three Wildcats to drain four 3-point shots and went an impressive 8-of-10 from the field. Her 20 points and three assists were both team highs on the night.

Fellow first-year and the Wildcats' leading scorer since the holiday break LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn.) also drained four 3-pointers to fuel her 18-point scoring surge. Holt had a team-best seven rebounds and also added an assist.

After making four baskets from beyond the arc in the Wildcats' win over Macalester, Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) continued to be a force from outside as she scored 12 of her 14 points against the Gusties from 3-point range. The senior also had two assists, two steals and one of the team's three blocks.

Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) was again extremely efficient for the Wildcats as she went 3-for-4 from the field for six points, while Sarah Manning (Page, Ariz.) went 3-for-3 for six points. Horsch and Manning each picked up blocks to help the Wildcats defensively.

Karina Schroeder was nearly unstoppable for the Gusties as she had a game-high 26 points and 12 points for a double-double. She also was 10-of-13 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 3-10 on the season and 2-8 in MIAC play. The Wildcats return home for round two with the College of Saint Benedict on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Butler Center
