Box Score As the St. Catherine University basketball team nears the halfway point of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) schedule, the young squad hoped it could find a way to pick up a much-needed win – especially against a Macaelster College squad that also boasted just one conference win so far this season. And thanks to a 42 percent shooting performance and double-digit scoring from four different palyers, the Wildcats were able to pull off a 65-59 victory over the Scots Saturday afternoon at the
Butler Center in St. Paul.
LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn.) had another career-best scoring game to lead the Wildcats' offense to its best shooting performance since its last MIAC win over the College of Saint Benedict in November. The Wildcats closed out the game shooting 47.1 percent from beyond the arc as
Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) and
Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) combined for six of the team's eight 3-pointers.
The game opened up in what looked like Macalester's favor as the Scots rolled to an early 10-point lead in the first five minutes of play. After pulling within three, the Wildcats found themselves down by 10 again with 9:23 to play in the half. The Wildcats then closed out the half on a 22-13 run to tie the game at 32-32.
The Wildcats would take a two-point lead to open the half before allowing the Scots the lead once more. But that was short-lived for Macalester as the Wildcats took the lead back and never surrendered it, despite an attempted comeback from the Scots in the final minutes.
Holt turned in her second double-double of the season and bettered her career-best mark from last week with 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds – 12 of which were on the defensive side . The first-year went 9-of-11 from the free throw line and had a team-high three assists and two steals. Holt leads all active Wildcats with 11.3 points per game, while her 6.8 rebounds per game ranks 11th in the MIAC.
Lee was a remarkable 4-of-8 on the day with all of her made shots coming from beyond the arc. The senior's 12 points were the most she has scored all season. She also added two rebounds, an assist and a block.
Horsch also had a season-best performance and was a big contibutor to the team's efficiency as she was 2-of-2 from 3-point range and 4-of-6 from the floor for a total of 10 points. The sophomore also pulled in four rebounds and added an assist.
Coming off a career-high performance against Bethel University on Wednesday,
Jenna Mistler (Austin, Texas) continued to play at a high-level as she broke double-digits for the second-straight game for 11 points. She shot 50 percent from the field, pulled in five rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.
For the Scots, Erin Murray scored a game-high 27 points – including six 3-pointers – while Veronika Jakubovie had a team-high 13 rebounds.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 3-9 on the season and 2-7 in the MIAC. They return to action Monday night against Gustavus Adolphus College. tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
