Soccer suffers tough 4-0 loss to Central in home opener

Hannah Brown led the team with two shots on goal

The St. Catherine University soccer team had high hopes heading into its season opener Friday afternoon against Central College at its home Wildcat Invitational. Unfortunately, though, the young Wildcat squad fell short as it suffered a 4-0 loss to the Dutch at St. Catherine in St. Paul.

Despite holding the advantage in corner kicks over the Dutch and managaing to outshoot their opponent 14-13 in total shots, the Wildcats struggled defensively.

The Dutch opened up the scoring in the 13th minute when Alayna bailey took advantage of a breakaway opportunity to beat sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn.) one-on-one to give the Dutch an early 1-0 lead. From their, the Dutch never looked back to earn their first victory of the season.

Mendez made several big saves in net to stop a great Wildcat deficit as she stopped six Dutch shots on goal. The Wildcats managed to put seven shots on goal with Hannah Brown (Burnsville, Minn.) leading the way with two.

The Wildcats are back in action Saturday as they hope to rebound against UW-River Falls - a squad that suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to University of Northwestern earlier in the day.
