After rescheduling two doubleheaders this week, the St. Catherine University softball team looked as if it would finally be able to complete its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series of the 2013 season against Macalester College Friday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the first game of the doubleheader was suspended in the middle of the fifth inning due to slippery playing conditions from snow accumulation. The contest
– which Macalester leads 9-4
– will be completed along with the second game at a later date.
Tough weather conditions got the best of the Wildcats in the first two innings as the Scots took a 4-0 lead after scoring three runs in the second.
However, senior
Cassie Rooney (Plymouth, Minn.) belted her first home run of the season to get the Wildcats on the board in the top of the third.
Callie Boelter (LeSueur, Minn.) would then score in the following inning to pull the Wildcats within two.
The bats would come alive for the Scots in the fourth scoring five runs to take a 9-2 lead.
The Wildcats were able to remain in the game, though, as they scored two runs before the game was halted.
Alyssa Besch (Apple Valley, Minn.) hit a single to get on base and then scored the third run of the game off a
Jenna Brady (Greenfield, Minn.) RBI single.
Alyssa Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) also picked up a hit in the top of the fifth and scored a run.
The Wildcats are scheduled to take on Carleton College Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Northfield, Minn., pending the weather and field conditions.
Information regarding the rescheduling of the Macalester doubleheader will be posted when available.
