After picking up threeMinnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) wins in two days at home, the St. Catherine University softball team hoped it could pick up another set of victories before hitting the road Sunday.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't find a way to bring in runs against tough Augsburg College pitching as they suffered a close 2-1 loss in nine innings before getting shut out 5-0 in game two Saturday afternoon in St. Paul.
Through both games, the Wildcats only compiled 13 hits against Amanda Eaton and Olivia Boerschinger of the Auggies and couldn't capitalize on several bases loaded situations.
Game one looked promising, though, as
Alyssa Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) led off the first inning with a single up the middle to get on base.
Jessica Tyminski (Champlin, Minn.) continued her hitting streak with an RBI single to bring Luedtke home and give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
First-year pitcher LIndsey Klein (Stillwater, Minn.) held the Auggies scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when pinch hitter Sarah Buckner batted in a run off a double to right center, which tied the game 1-1 and forced extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth, the Auggies used two hits and a pair of stolen bases to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth before shutting out the Wildcats for the game one win.
Despite taking the loss, Klein pitched her fourth complete game this week, struck out five batters and allowed just two runs through nine innings.
Tyminski finished game one 2-for-3 with an RBI and walk. The designated player is now leading all Wildcat hitters with a .383 batting average and a .617 slugging percentage.
In game two, the Wildcats held the Auggies scoreless through two innings, but the bats came alive in the third as Allyson Ruedy and Lauren Hurley each hit home runs to give the Auggies a 3-0 lead.
Buckner and Bri Dorale would pick up RBI in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to lift the Auggies to victory.
Kaitlyn Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) led the Wildcats at the plate with two hits in game two, while Tyminski added another to finish the day 3-for-6.
Jenna Brady (Greenfield, Minn.) and
Alyssa McKee (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) picked up a hit in each game, as did
Alyssa Luedtke who has now successfully recorded a hit in 14-straight games.
With the losses, the Wildcats falls to 12-15 on the year and 4-10 in MIAC play. The Wildcats will play their fourth-straight doubleheader Sunday against Gustavus Adolphus College. Game one is scheduled for 10 a.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
