Wildcat tennis scores 9-0 victory over Macalester to claim share of MIAC title, clinch No. 1 seed in conference tournament

Tennis claimed a share of the MIAC title with a win over Macalester

Heading into the 2013 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season, it was clear that the St. Catherine University tennis team had the potential to make a run at the conference title – a feat that has never happened in program history – thanks to four returning all-conference players and fresh talent.

Only three institutions have ever claimed an MIAC women's tennis championship – Carleton College, Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of St. Thomas – since 1982.

But 2013 is now a different story as the Wildcats claimed a share of the MIAC regular season title and clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs with a 9-0 win over Macalester College Wednesday evening in Lakeville, Minn.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 9-0 in MIAC play to capture the first conference championship in program history and only the second in school history; the St. Catherine volleyball team claimed a conference crown in 1983.

The first-place finish is also the best for the Wildcats since the 2004 season when they finished second in the MIAC and competed in the NCAA tournament.

The Wildcats opened up the match against Macalester as they have all season with impressive doubles play sweeping 3-0 and earning 8-0 decisions at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D.) and Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn.) picked up their ninth MIAC doubles win of the season to remain undefeated as a pair in conference play.

At singles, Kylie Ketcho (Edina, Minn.) and Salo both picked up perfect 6-0, 6-0 wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, respectively.

Victoria Bravo (Tucson, Ariz.) kept her untarnished conference record alive with a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Macalester's Paige Schaefer, while Maria Koval (Green Bay, Wis.) also remains undefeated in MIAC singles with a pair of 6-1 set wins over Alicia Roopschand at the No. 3 spot.

Michaela Burroughs (Waterloo, Neb.) earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carmen Whitehead at the No. 2 spot, while Lorenzen finished off Rachel Seidner 6-3, 6-3 to help the Wildcats cruise to their sixth 9-0 sweep this season.

The Wildcats are just one win away from winning the title outright and finishing an undefeated conference season. The regular season concludes Friday against St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., at 4 p.m.

The MIAC tournament is set to begin Friday, May 3 at Gustavus in St. Peter, Minn. The Wildcats will face one of the quarterfinal winners in a semifinal match Saturday, may 4 at 11:30 a.m.
