After a week off of play due to inclement weather, the St. Catherine University softball team was looking forward to get back to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play but knew it would be tough as they faced the No. 15-ranked team in the country in their return to competition.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't find a way to slow down the hard-hitting University of St. Thomas offense as they suffered a 6-0 shutout in game one before falling 13-1 in five innings in the second Monday evening at the Rosemount Dome in Rosemount, Minn.
In game one, the Wildcats managed to hold the powerful Tommie offense to just six runs and pick up a few hits of their own, but couldn't find a way to bring any runs across the plate.
Shae Elliott (Richfield, Minn.) hat the biggest hit of the night with a double in the bottom of the fourth.
First-year
Lindsey Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) pitched her third complete game of the season and struck out seven batters - including the 2012 MIAC Player-of-the-Year, Kimmy Hassel, three times.
In game two, the Tommies got started quickly as they launched four home runs through three innings to fuel a 10-run scoring streak.
The Wildcats gained a little life in the bottom of the third as
Larrissa Karl (Buffalo Lake, Minn.) picked up a hit to get the offense going. With bases loaded,
Jenna Brady (Greenfield, Minn.) hit an RBI single up the middle to bring pinch runner
Caitlin DeWitt (Stillwater, Minn.) across the plate for the lone Wildcat run.
Brady finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while
Alyssa Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) picked up a hit in each of the games and
Alyssa McKee (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) added another in game one.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't generate any more offense power and had to settle for their seventh MIAC loss of the season.
The Wildcats are scheduled to take on Gustavus Adolphus College Wednesday at 12 p.m. at Augsburg College.
