On the same day that
WCCO published a feature on St. Catherine University senior tennis player
Michaela Burroughs (Waterloo, Neb.) and her team's historic 2013 season, the Wildcat squad proved why it remains the top Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) team with an impressive 9-0 win over Concordia College Saturday at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
The Wildcats dropped just two games in both singles and doubles play to propel the team to a perfect 7-0 conference mark with just three conference opponents left on the schedule.
With the dynamic pair of
Victoria Bravo (Tucson, Ariz.) and
Kylie Ketcho (Edina, Minn.) leading the way at No. 1 doubles, the Wildcats cruised to three 8-0 wins in doubles play. This season the Wildcats are 20-1 in all doubles matches with the only loss coming to the top-ranked doubles team in the region of Bridget Doyle and Anne Lombardi of Carleton College at the No. 1 spot.
In singles, Burroughs led the way with a perfect straight-set win over Olivia DeLeon, while Ketcho,
Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D.) and
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn.) followed suit with 6-0, 6-0 wins over their respective Cobber opponents.
Bravo – who remains the top-ranked MIAC singles player at the No. 13 spot in the latest
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region poll – used a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chelsie McGraw to remain undefeated in MIAC matches at the No. 1 singles spot.
Maria Koval (Green Bay, Wis.) also kept her MIAC singles record untarnished with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Taylor Peterson at No. 3 singles.
The No. 7-regionally-ranked Wildcats earned their third MIAC sweep of the season over the Cobbers and hold on to the top spot in the MIAC standings. However, the Wildcats will face a tough test next Friday as they take on a University of St. Thomas squad that is a perfect 6-0 in MIAC play. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the University of Minnesota.
