Box Score
As the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) winds down, the St. Catherine University basketball team hoped it could pull off an upset victory against one of the league's top teams in its final three games of the year.
Despite being down by just one point at half time to Gustavus Adolphus College, the Wildcats couldn't find a way to sustain momentum as the Gusties pulled away late for a 67-59 win, Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.
For the second-straight game,
Mary Neumann (Duluth, Minn.) was nearly unstoppable for the WIldcats as she cranked out a career-high 22 points to lead all players on the day. The sophomore also led the Wildcats with six rebounds and was phenomal from beyond the arc, hitting 4-of-6 to continue to hold on to the No. 1 spot in the MIAC among all 3-point shooters.
The Wildcats matched the play of the Gusties - who had been on a downward slide, losing four of the last five heading into Saturday - for the first half. The Gusties held a 33-32 lead at the break, but the WIldcats continued to fight back and even held the lead four times throughout the game.
But the Gusties came out strong in the second half as they took an 11 point lead with 14 minutes to play. However, the WIldcats would manage to pull within four, before the Gusties finally pulled away for good in the final five minutes.
Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) was the second-leading scoreer for the Wildcts as she put up 12 points, while Sarah Mong (Page, Ariz.) and
Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) each chipped in nine for the WIldcats offensively.
Julia Dysthe trailed just behind Neumann's impressive day with 21 points for the Gusties, while Abby Rothenbuler and Kelsey Florian each scored 11 points.
The Wildcats will have a few days off before travelling to Moorhead, Minn., Wednesday, to take on the league-leading Concordia College Cobbers. Game time is scheduled for 7: 30 p.m.
