Box Score 2 After narrowly losing to Gustavus Adolphus College in the final Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match of the 2013 season, the St. Catherine University volleyball team hoped it could find a way to recover and end its season on a high-note in its final two matches at the UW-Stevens Point tournament. The Wildcats faced the tough test of taking on a St. Norbert College squad that finished third in the Midwest Conference this year and host UW-Stevens Point that won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship last week and is currently ranked No. 21 nationally.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't come up with the offense to take down their opponents in suffering a 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-18) loss to St. Norbert before falling 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-16) to host UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in Stevens Point, Wis.
Zoe Peterson (Rosemount, Minn.) was the top Wildcat hitter on the day as she recorded a team-best 11 kills against St. Norbert and five against the Pointers. She also hit an impressive .556 in the loss to the host school and added two block assists in the Wildcats' four-set thriller with the Green Knights.
The Wildcats had a huge defensive day against the Green Knights as four players had double-digit dig performances with setter Karsee Knuston (New London, Minn.) leading the way with 19, while
Abigail Palmer (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) had 17.
Shanee Herd (Alexandria, Minn.) had 15 and
Shelby Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn.) chipped in 12.
Amber Zeiher (LeSueur, Minn.) led a huge blocking effort for the Wildcats in the first match with a solo block and five blocks assists. The sophomore middle also added eight kills and hit a team-best .278.
Knutson capped off an impressive season with 34 assists against St. Norbert and finished the weekend with 45 for a season total of 594. Her 6.06 assists per set ranks No. 10 in the MIAC this year.
Jana Christensen (North Mankato, Minn.) recorded eight kills and two block assists in the Wildcats' final weekend. The junior completes her first year as a Wildcat as the team's top hitter averaging 1.92 kills per set and a total of 202 kills.
In her first season as libero for the Wildcats, Herd compiled 20 digs thanks to a final weekend total of 439. Her 4.35 digs per set ranks No. 7 in the MIAC this season.
The Wildcats finish the 2013 season with a 1-10 MIAC record and 8-22 overall mark.
