Box Score The St. Catherine University soccer team hoped it could close out the 2013 season with a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season with a win against a Bethel University squad that boasted just one point more in the conference standings heading into the final game.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats weren't able to find an answer to the Royals second half goal as they ended their season with a 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon in Arden Hills, Minn.
Despite a scoreless first half, the Royals managed to outshoot the Wildcats 17-5 and held the advantage in corner kicks 8-2.
In the 68th minute, Bethel was finally able to find a way to beat junior goalkeeper
Abbey Hinton (St. Paul, Minn.) as Olivia Haggerty netted a pass from Mikala Smith to help the Royals pick up their third MIAC victory of the season. Hinton suffered her first loss of the season, but came up with nine saves to keep the Royals close for most of the game.
Offensively, sophomore
Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif.) recorded a team-high two shots, while
Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn.),
Elena Jimenez (Eagan, Minn.) and
Sarah Anderson (Marshalltown, Iowa) each recorded one.
Senior
Lensa Gurmessa (Minneapolis, Minn.) ends her four years as a Wildcat as the team's leading scorer with seven goals, four assists and 18 points. She ranks in the top-15 in the MIAC in points and goals this season. Fellow senior
Kristi Thorwick (Maplewood, Minn.) concluded her senior campaign with two assists and two points as a four-year defender for the Wildcats. Thorwick was also a All-MIAC Honorable Mention selection in 2011.
The Wildcats complete their season with a 2-9 MIAC record and end the year 7-11 overall.
