Box Score After suffering a tough loss to UC-Santa Cruz to open the 2013-14 season Friday night, the St. Catherine University basketball team hoped it could recover with a win Saturday. Despite playing its opponent a bit closer, the Wildcats couldn't stop the University of Puget Sound offensive in suffering a 68-51 loss to conclude the Hampton Inn Classic in Santa Cruz, Calif.
The Wildcats had a better all-around day as they shot 31.4 percent from the field and managed to take the lead early in the game before the Loggers would eventually take it for good.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was first-year
Abby Torgerson (Anoka, Minn.) with 10 points for a second-straight double-digit scoring performance to open her collegiate career. She went 3-for-6 from the field and pulled in a team-high seven rebounds to add to the Wildcats' team total of 47.
Jenna Mistler (Austin, Texas) and
LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn.) each added eight points offensively. Mistler also added four rebounds and a team-high three steals, while Holt added three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
After leading the team in scoring in her Wildcat debut Fridaty,
Gabby Zehrer (Rogers, Minn.) added six points in Saturday' matchup and was second on the team in rebounds with five. She also added an assist and a steal.
The Wildcats' leading scorer from a year ago in
Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) posted four points, while first-years
Mari Lee (Dawson, Minn.) and
Erin FitzGerald (Georgetown, Texas) each netted the only 3-point shots they attempted to add to the team point total.
Despite several strong performances, the Wildcats couldn't slow down the Logger offensive strike as three players reached double-digits including Amanda Forshay who recorded a game-high 13 points.
Zehrer was the WIldcats' representative on the All-Tournament Team. The Wildcats will open up play at home as they host Crown College in a non-conference contest Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the
