Soccer can't hold off Macalester in 2-0 MIAC loss

Senior Lensa Guremessa had one shot on goal against the Scots
Box Score After honoring two of the St. Catherine University soccer team seniors in Lensa Gurmessa (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kristi Thorwick (Maplewood, Minn.) – both who have significantly contributed to a program turnaround in the last two seasons – the Wildcats hoped they could upset a second-place Macalester College squad looking for its second-straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoff bid.

Despite holding off the Scots through the first half, the Wildcats couldn't slow down a talented Macalester offense in the second half as the Scots scored two goals to hand the Wildcats a 2-0 loss Saturday afternoon in St. Paul.

"We played well against a very good team," said Head Coach Chris Citowicki. "I am very happy with the effort we put forth. Hopefully we can have a repeat of this effort versus the (College of) Saint Benedict on Wednesday."

Despite a strong defensive effort, the Wildcats were outmatched 4-3 in corner kicks and  9-3  in shots on goal. Goalie Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn.) helped keep the Wildcats alive through the first half with several big savesto total seven on the day.

The Wildcats managed to hold the Scots scoreless and shut down one of the league's top players in Georgia Cloepfil through the first half. Unfortunately, she found a way to set up her teammate Bonnie Gale twice in the second to give the Scots their seventh MIAC victory of the season.

For the Wildcats, the seniors generated a majority of the attack as Thorwick recorded a team-high two shots on goal and Gurmessa added the other.

With the loss the Wildcats fall to 7-9 on the season and 2-6 in the MIAC. They play host to another MIAC playoff hopeful in Saint Benedict Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. before wrapping up the season next Saturday against Bethel University in Arden Hills, Minn., at 1 p.m.
