After suffering a tough loss to St. Olaf College on Saturday, the St. Catherine University soccer team hoped it could find a way to come up with a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win against the University of St. Thomas – a team still in contention for a conference playoff spot – with just four games remaining in the 2013 season.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't find a way to slow down Taylor Zubrowski as she used a two-goal performance to help the Tommies to a 2-0 victory on their home field Wednesday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn.
The Wildcats and Tommies appeared to play in back-and-forth fashion in the opening 20 minutes of the first half, but Zubrowski beat
Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn.) in the 23rd minute off a headed pass from Katy Scherer to give the Tommies a 1-0 lead haeding into the break. Then, less than six minutes into the second half, Zubrowki struck again when she chipped the ball in over Mendez off a pass from Morgan McConachie.
The Tommies held the advantage in shots 11-4 and also had six corner kicks as opposed to none for the Wildcats.
Mendez finished the game with three saves in goal, while
Nina Bukowski (Two Harbors, Minn.) had the most opportunities offensively with two shots on goal.
Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif.) also took two shots in favor of the Wildcats with one making it to St. Thomas goalie Jenny Grehak.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 7-9 on the season and 2-6 in the MIAC. The Wildcats return home against Macalester College Saturday at 1 p.m.
