After dropping the last three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matches, the St. Catherine University volleyball team was hoping to impress on senior night and end on a high-note in the team's final conference match of the 2012 season against Macalester College, Friday evening.
The Wildcats got just what they were looking for as the seniors led the way in a much-needed 3-0(25-14, 25-10, 25-20) win over the Scots at the
Butler Center.
Marie O'Neil (St. Michael, Minn.) and
Stephanie Meschke (Faribault, Minn.) had a huge night for the Wildcats as both recorded a match-high 10 kills a piece. Meschke was the Wildcats' most efficient hitter as she recorded a .429 hitting percentage. She also chipped in one assist, one dig and two block assists.
O'Neil was a part of four of the team's six total blocks, recoding two solos and two assists. The middle blocker also hit .364 and had two assists on the night.
First-year
Zoe Barr (River Falls, Wis.) turned in another huge performance from the Wildcat front row as she tied Meschke for the night's best hitting percentage (.429) and recorded eight kills, one assist and one dig.
Sophomore
Karsee Knutson (New London, Minn.) recorded a match-high 17 assists setting for the Wildcats. She also contributed seven digs to help stop the Macalester attack.
As a unit, the Wildcats hit .303 against the Scots and had four service aces. Seniors
Brittni Wangerin (Prior Lake, Minn.),
Kelsey Wirtanen (Hibbing, Minn.) and
Ashley Crapser (Becker, Minn.) each recorded an ace in the match.
Nicole Pothen (Faribault, Minn.), who has been solid as the Wildcats' libero this season, chipped in five digs and one assist in the win.
The Wildcats wrap up their season at Northwestern College in Roseville, Minn., Saturday afternoon. The first match of the day against Crown College begins at 1 p.m., followed shortly by the Wildcats' final match against Northwestern at 3 p.m.
