Wildcat volleyball seniors bid farewell

The 2012 St. Catherine University volleyball season comes to a close against Macalester College, Friday evening at the Butler Center. The evening will honor six seniors who have had a large impact on the recent success of the Wildcat volleyball program. Since 2009, the Wildcat volleyball program has won 58 regular season matches and 19 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matches. In 2010, the Wildcat volleyball team made it to the first round of the MIAC playoffs.

A word from Coach Phelps about the Class of 2013:
This year's seniors are a very special group. They are a group who has just about everything a coach could want in a team, let alone a single class of student-athletes.  From “go-to” players to critical role players to a transfer student who quickly became an integral piece of the team to a super senior who took a year off and came back even better than before she left to those who never quit and constantly worked year-round to improve.  Each of you have made a mark on the history and legacy of this program that will not be forgotten anytime soon. For that, we thank you.

You have each left a lasting impression on me, your teammates and our program. Thank you for all you've done to move our program and sport in the right direction at St. Kate's, in our conference and beyond.  I sincerely hope you'll stay in touch with us and keep playing this great sport that has brought us all together. It is clear you all have very bright futures in your chosen professions. Don't forget to get out and play to maintain a good balance in your lives.

The six Wildcat seniors each bid farewell below:

#3 Ashley Crapser
Becker, Minn. / Becker
Defensive Specialist
Major: Nursing

Words from Coach Phelps: Ashley – the character, determination and heart you have shown in your time as a Wildcat have been things that few would see jumping off a stats sheet or a newspaper column, but they have been invaluable to our team.  I know how tough your road has been at times. You have always been someone this team could count on to fill whatever roll was needed and do it by giving your all.  You helped the coaching staff keep the team grounded, focused and working as a unit.  Don't ever doubt the value you had and the impact you've made on our program. It's not measured by minutes on the court or games played. It's measured by the intangibles you have brought to our team, our program and our lives.
Words from Coach Benka: Ashley, I will miss your leadership, reading our team dynamics, consistently pushing yourself and wanting to improve, encouragement on and off the court.

Ashley's salute:
It's hard to believe that I have spent nine years of my life devoted to volleyball and that it's finally come to an end. The last four years of volleyball have meant so much to me. Those years have provided me with not only a team, but also a second family and huge support system that I don't know what I would do without. I am so glad that I chose to continue my love for volleyball into college and I am going to miss every minute of it.
I can't say its been easy every step of the way, but I pushed through trying to balance school, work and volleyball because I love the sport and I want to say thanks to everyone who made it possible.

First, I want to say thank you to my mom and dad who have been there for me throughout my entire thing. They have made it possible for me to continue to play volleyball and have taught me to never give up. They even helped me pay my rent when I chose volleyball over work. I really couldn't have done it without them and I'm so grateful for all their love and support.

I also want to say thank you to my high school coach Jesse who introduced me to volleyball. She really taught me how to be competitive and work hard for what I want. She made the sport very enjoyable and had the confidence in me to continue at a college level. I've always been able to go to her for advice and reassurance, even once I went on to college volleyball.

Now, I want to thank my teammates who have made volleyball become more than a sport to me. My volleyball team is like a second family. This might be because we're forced to spend tons of hours together for three straight months, but I wouldn't have it any other way. No matter what I'm going through, I can always find a teammate to confide in, especially my seniors. We have been through a lot together, and I am grateful for each of you. Britt, you're not only a teammate, but a roommate and a best friend and I know that will never change. Marie, you have introduced me to a completely different side of volleyball. I love playing sand volleyball with you and all the great people you have introduced me to and I hope that never ends. Steph, you are always positive and you never let mistakes get to you. I respect that about you. Kelsey, I can always count on you to make me laugh. Corey, reminds us over and over not to jump when we pass, but some how you make it work. You can pass the ball and do a complete 360 and it's still a perfect pass, it amazes me. I'm really going to miss you and your spastic passing skills. Nicole, I'm glad you decided to come back out for volleyball our junior year. We've had a lot of good times together. You've really pushed me to be a better volleyball player.

I also want to mention my sophomores. I really wish I had another two years with you ladies. It's crazy because I never felt like you girls were two years younger than us. You are all great girls and I'm extremely sad to leave you. I wish you the best of luck and I want you to know I'm always here for you. I couldn't have made it through the past two years without you guys. Love you Karsee, Smash, Zoe, Jordyn, and Marnie, you have really made my volleyball experience that much better!

Now, I want to thank my coaches, because I really wouldn't be here if it weren't for them. I want to say thank you for always believing in me and having enough confidence in me to keep me on this team. You guys have taught me that I don't have to always be on the court to be contributing to the team. You have helped me build my confidence not only as a volleyball player, but also as a person. Corey, Kim, and Kaylene have all been there for me whether I'm going through something volleyball related or not. You guys have put up with all my emotions and tears. It's great knowing that I can come to you guys for anything. Corey, I give you huge credit for putting up with all of us women. You guys have taught me more than I ever knew there was to know about volleyball. Thanks for everything.

I also want to say thanks to some of my teammates who have already had their senior night. Thanks Kayla, Callie, Mal and Nicole for being someone I can look up to. You guys made my first three years of volleyball better then I could have asked for. Thanks everyone for all the support!

#2 Stephanie Meschke
Fairbault, Minn. / Bethlehem Academy
Outside Hitter
Major: Exercise & Sport Science, Pre-Physical Therapy

Words from Coach Phelps: Steph – this program owes you a great deal.  You have been asked to step in and play positions that I know you never dreamed of playing at this level. Your willingness to be a middle, right-side, outside or any other role that you were asked to do, as well as the trust you showed in the coaching staff throughout those decisions, was and is greatly appreciated. It's rare to find a player who believes so whole-heartedly in doing whatever is necessary to help the team and not complaining or questioning.  Thank you for working tirelessly to learn a new position every year you were here!  Your constant smile and fantastic attitude in the last three years has been something everyone in our program as well as those watching from the stands has admired and appreciated.
Words from Coach Benka: Stephanie, I will miss your versatility, strong, quick, going with the flow since it was always up in the air which position you would be starting each set, positive attitude.

Staphanie's salute:
Volleyball has been such a huge part of the past twelve years of my life. It is so hard to believe that this chapter is coming to a close.  I have been so blessed for the opportunity of having played a sport that taught me so many lessons and brought with it so many wonderful memories and friendships. I am so thankful to my parents, family, coaches, and teammates who have supported me through thick and thin and made my volleyball career unforgettable.

Mom and Dad- You have been my number one fans since I first stepped foot on a volleyball court. I can't begin to express my thanks to you for cheering me on from my first volleyball game as I struggled to get an under-hand serve over the net (You. Are. Saints.) to tonight and every competition in between. Mom, you have always been there to receive a big sweaty hug and celebrate or cry with me at the end of every game. I'm going to miss hearing your whistle and “Let's go, Stepha!” calling down to me from the stands. Dad, you were my first and will forever be my favorite coach.  I can always count on you for a great analytical discussion of each game along with a big 'ol grin and bear hug. Thank you both for everything you have done and continue to do for me. I love you both so much!

Coaches- Corey, you have the corniest, puny-est, weirdest sense of humor. You made every practice and game a blast. I already miss not being able to stop in your office to chat/steal candy every hour. Just make sure you keep that candy jar stocked and I'll keep stopping by (just kidding, I'll stop by regardless). Kim, I can always rely on you for your sunny disposition and smile. You always know what to say to me to get me back on track or push me forward. I have learned so much from you in all aspects of the game and life. Kayla, you have been such a great teammate and coach! There will never be a better enforcer anywhere. Keep working on your yelling voice and mad face because someone has to pick up the slack for Corey's sissy voice! You have all made your own impact on my volleyball career at St. Kate's. I'm really going to miss playing with you in practice and learning from you. You are easily the most fun group of coaches I have had! Thank you for all you do and all you have sacrificed for our team and the program! It wouldn't be the same without you!

Freshmen Kittens- it has been so much fun getting to know you all this season! You have all grown so much this year in confidence and your skills! Keep up the hard work! You girls have so much to look forward to and I can't wait to come back and watch you all kick butt next year! Love you all!

Sophomore KITTENS- You girls are the best! You made coming to practice every day so much fun. This season has been one that I'll remember forever. Smash, Kars, Jo, Bloe, and Marndog I love you girls! You are such a fun group! Bloe, one word. Nugget. Oh, and who runs the world? Squirrels. Smash and Kars (I put you in the same sentence because I know you wouldn't want to be separated.  Jordyn, you always get so excited for your teammates. I especially love when you jump up and down! Keep up the support! Marndog!! You are the sweetest, cutest, hardworking girl! Your positivity is contagious! Ladies, you each have so much to offer your team and the program, so take the lead next year and kick some booty!! Don't forget to enjoy every second of the remainder of your time playing together because before you know it you'll be writing your own senior salute and wondering where all that time went. I can't wait to come and cheer you on. But you probably shouldn't look for me in the stands because in typical fashion I will probably be too excited to sit still. Love you!!

Senior Kittens- I love you girls. These past four years with you have been filled with so many memories on and off the court. We've pushed each other, laughed and cried together, won and lost and watched each other grow through it all. It's amazing to look back and see how much has changed since our first overnight on campus as seniors in high school (as awkward as it was). AshCrap, you are such a loyal friend. I can always count on you for an ear to listen and great heart to hearts. Britty, one word for ya: corruption. You are so fun, and I have you to thank for many fun times. Kelsey, it's been great to have someone to go through these busy, crazy, tough few months with. I can't wait to spend the next three years learning and growing together as physical therapists. MO, you are such a bright person.  You know so much and are so quick develop a solution or new course of action on the spot. I can always come to you for advice (whether that's in regards to fashion or life).  Po, I can't believe our time together as athletes has come to a close. We have had a total of 11 seasons competing together between volleyball, basketball, track and softball. I couldn't be more thankful for each one of those. We have shared so many memories through the years, from running the 4x200 together, watching you get the final block to secure our State Championship, to playing side-by-side with you as a college athlete. It has been a pleasure competing with you. You have such a strong drive and are capable of so much. I can't wait to come to you when you're FINALLY done with med school and bug you with all my medical needs. Love ya killer! I'm going to miss seeing all of your bright shining faces every day and spending our afternoons playing this amazing sport together. I love you girls so much!!

It makes me so sad to know that next pre-season I'll be able to comfortably sit down and stand up from a toilet and not need to take fifths on dinner because I am not a bottomless pit. And yet, I am so happy and grateful to have been given such a wonderful journey to enjoy. It's hard to see something that has given you so much come to a close. Looking back on every thing I have learned and gained makes this so bittersweet. I am so sad to close this chapter and yet so grateful to have lived it.  Thank you to everyone who has made my volleyball career so unforgettable.

#11 Marie O'Neil
St. Michael, Minn. / St. Micahel-Albertville
Middle Blocker
Major: Fashion Merchandising

Words from Coach Phelps: Marie – words cannot express how happy I am that you stuck with this program. You took a leap of faith, just like the rest of the team when I came here, and you bought into that vision for the team very quickly.  You carried that into the off season more than most and (with Aaron's help) played year round.  It's refreshing to see how much your game has improved in the last year alone.  You've had more than a few light-bulb moments on and off the court that I'm sure you'll carry with you for years to come. Thank you for leading by example on the court, in the weight room, in the classroom and beyond.  I'm sure I'll see you on the court frequently in the future.
Words from Coach Benka: Marie, I will miss your desire to improve, hard work during the off-season, having to constantly listen to me, a mind that never stops thinking, constant chatter (keeping me awake while I drove).

Marie's salute:
Holy cow. I can't believe that my senior season is coming to an end and that it's already senior night. I came to St. Kate's wanting to continue my volleyball career and pick up where high school left off. I had no idea that being on this team would define my time at St. Kate's. I am so grateful for my four years as a Wildcat and can't imagine my college experience without even one of my teammates.

There are so many people to thank! To my family—Mom, Dad, Lynn, Ivan, Grant, Papa, Gramma Sharon, and so many more—thank you for the countless car rides, hours spent sitting on bleachers, and money spent on everything from club fees to new knee pads. Mom, I can't thank you enough for the sacrifices you have made for me, both in time and money, not only for volleyball but for everything.  You are the strongest, most amazing woman I know.

Aaron, thank you for being the Wildcats' biggest fan. Thank you for never turning down an opportunity to play more volleyball; I owe a lot of my improvement over the past two years to you. Also, thanks from Jordyn even though she's not a senior. She loves you—typical.

Thanks to my high school and club coaches, especially John Yunker, who saw potential in me, and was a big part of me being recruited to play at St. Kate's.

Colby, you totally ditched us the last two years but your legacy lives on every time I step on the court to munch balls.

K-Sis, thank you for gracing us with your presence this season and teaching us all about your tweaked pancreas. You're totes awes. Obvs.

Kim, you are such a great coach and an amazing person. Thank you for being a confidant, a therapist, and for having good things to say even if we never listen (all Corey's fault).

Corey, you are by far the most knowledgeable, most easy going, and weirdest coach I have ever had. This program is so lucky to have you and I can't wait to see what comes next. Thanks for not judging me for the number of peanut butter bagels I've consumed in your office. Thank you for always being available to chat about volleyball, school, and horrible jobs...

Kittens!! Past and present, you have all enhanced my time here in ways you might not even know. Brit, I could not imagine a better freshman roommate. Thank you for the late night Facebook chats from 10 feet apart, the many Domino's pepperoni pizzas, and for always being able to quote our favorite shows. Callie and Jordyn, thank you for playing so much volleyball with me over the past couple years, and especially for driving all the way to Albertville so often. Ladies of 1874, thanks for letting me hang out and eat all your food. Po, you are my one true love. But obviously you knew that. AshCrap, thanks for being my best pepper partner ever, and for always being there to talk. To all the sophomores and freshmen, you are all amazing and I can't wait to see the great things you do in the rest of your careers at St. Kate's. Make us proud!! Oh, and Bambi is my favorite.

One last thing: oooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

#8 Nicole Pothen
Faribault, Minn. / Bethlehem Academy
Libero
Major: Biology

Words from Coach Phelps: Po – when you initially emailed me, two weeks before my first preseason telling me you were not playing because of an internship, I have to say I was disappointed.  In hind sight, it was probably the best thing not only for you and the course of your academics, but for your athletic career and definitely for our program. The fact that you had to constantly try to prove yourself last year when you battled with Callie helped solidify your confidence and belief that you could be the best libero in the conference. You should be proud of the work you've done to help lead the defense on this team.  After all the bumps and bruises, you have the “defense is an attitude, not a position” approach. Thanks for never relenting, rarely letting the smile leave your face and adapting to the system and changes we threw at you in the last two years.
Words from Coach Benka: Nicole, I will miss your athleticism, punishing your body from flying after every ball, drive to make yourself better then you already are, huge smile, talk on the court.

Nicole's salute:
I can't believe my final season of volleyball is coming to an end! I can easily say that this was my favorite season during my time at St. Kate's. From three a day practices, to Corey breaking his foot, this season was full of some pretty crazy memories.

To my Family: Mom, Dad, and Tom- Thank you for coming to so many of my games this year, and every year. It's so amazing how much you've learned about volleyball the past nine years. Your comments about the game have changed from “I didn't show up until halftime” (what?!) to more accurate things such as “Have you seen your dig percentage this season?” I really appreciate all the support you've given me that allowed me to play for so long and into college. I'm really lucky to have such an amazing family!

To my favorites: Caiti and Ben- Thank you for being my biggest fans! For always telling me that even if I played bad at least I looked pretty doing it. The big signs, the tee-shirts, and always being there to listen to me talk endlessly about volleyball!

To my Coaches: Thank you for all the help you've given me the past couple years! I learned so much about volleyball playing for you. Thank you for always pushing me to play my best even when I was exhausted, and for always telling me how awesome I am at passing after I shank a ball or two.

Seniors: You guys are so amazing! Stepha - Our sixth season playing together? Yup, not too bad I'd say. Kelsey - “Are you talking about Philip Phelps?” Marie - Never forget to use the secret and to believe it when you do! In every situation even when trying to grab chapstick out of your purse! Crapser- Libero club! Bits - You're a stud lil' Miss 1,000 Dig/Kill club! SO proud of you! I'm gunna miss our over-the-top handshake before games and kissing each others' boo-boos so we can make it through the game without collapsing.

Teammates: I'm going to miss you girls so much! I have so many amazing memories from our time together at practice, traveling, and spending the night in hotel rooms! Smashley and Bloe, you guys are the best cuddlers ever- even when Bloe talks about nuggets. Kars, your serve makes me want to cry. I'm so glad you played for my team and not on any other team. J Wow, you have the best attitude on the court I'm going to miss it so much. Marn-Pup, you are the bomb diggity, keep diggin' dog. And freshmen, you guys were so fun this year. I've really enjoyed getting to know all of you and I can't wait to watch all of you play next year!

And Remember: BUMP, SET, SPIKE!!!  GoOoOo VOLLEYBALL!!

#4 Brittni Wangerin
Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake
Outside Hitter
Major: Social Work

Words from Coach Phelps: Britt – it's no secret, the last three years with you have been an adventure. You have become one of the best outside hitters in the conference for the last two years. In doing so, I hope that you have also learned as much about yourself and how to thrive in “the real world” as you have in our conference and program. You are the type of player that comes around few times in a coaching career. Your determination and willpower surpass what many believe you're capable of.  I'm proud of the strides you've made in your game and as a person in the last few years. You have made me a better coach in many ways, and for that I am grateful. If you take anything with you from our program aside from a deeper love of this game and a greater skillset, I hope it's the power of positive thinking and a good attitude (even if it's too early in the morning).  Thank you for everything you've brought to this team, this program and department.
Words from Coach Benka: Brittni, I will miss your competitiveness, constant talk on the court, playing through the pain, making me laugh, you and Po's pre-set hand slaps!

Brittni's salute:
It's hard for me to sit down and think that my four  years of college volleyball are coming to an end. I can't even begin to put into words what an amazing and awesome experience it has been being able to be involved in SCU athletics. Throughout these four years, I've learned so much about myself and have gained some amazing friends in the process. First and foremost, I want to thank my family, especially my mom, for encouraging and supporting me throughout these four years. Mom, I can't imagine what this experience would have been like without you by my side every step of the way. You've logged quite a few miles and hours just coming to watch me play and supporting me (and always supplied me with after-game Arby's and/or a mountain dew—you're the best!). You were there when I had my best games and you were there when I had my worst. You were there through every injury and every struggle I had to overcome as a player and a student. I vented, cried, laughed and have shared every moment of this with you and I wouldn't change a single thing. Without you, sometimes I wonder if I would have made it through. YOU are THE reason I am here and have been as successful in both volleyball and school. You always had something positive to say even when I couldn't seem to see it. I love you so much, and thank you for being there for almost every game these last four years. You have no idea how much it means to me.

Secondly, I would like to thank my coaches, starting with my high school coaches, Dean and Wagner. You guys played a huge role in why I decided to continue on into college athletics. As a senior in high school, I didn't think I could do it, nor was it really on my mind, but your encouragement and belief in me made me believe I could too. You guys taught me so much and helped me grow as a volleyball player and as a person. I can't thank you enough for that. Corey… where do I begin with you? I think you are the only person that could possibly make me laugh when I screw up, even after shanking a pass (o-lay!!) or bombing a ball way out of bounds. You taught me to see the positives in everything I do, even when it seems impossible. You showing your love for the game every day in practice made me want to play and reminded me why I love this game so much. I can honestly say that over these last three years, you have made me the best volleyball player I could possibly be, and you play a huge part in why our team was so successful. You pushed me to my limit and always expected so much out of me, and that pushed me to excel. Thank you for that. And Kim, you always had a smile on your face. I can recall multiple times where I just couldn't get enough blocking practice (sarcasm), and you had a joke or something that always helped me laugh it off when I struggled. Thank you for being such a positive and outgoing influence in my volleyball career.

And lastly to my senior girls, I'm not sure what to say or where to begin. There are too many great things to say about all of you. Po, Mo, Kelsey, Ash and Steph… I can't imagine going through these four years without all of you there. I could go on and on about all of the memories we have had together, but I think that would add another two pages or so, so I'll just say this… We've laughed so hard where we literally had to stop playing to collect ourselves, cried to the point where there were no words, sweat A LOT (to the point where you guys refused to put your arms around me in team huddles), and have had entirely too many embarrassing moments with each other. Plus we all have WAY too much dirt on each other to ever not be friends. You are all amazing volleyball players and even better friends. Even though I am sad our college volleyball careers are ending, I am so excited for what is in store for us in years to come. And to all my teammates, you guys are the best. I know you all will continue to rock it in your remaining years. Savor every moment you have on that court because before you know it, it's gone. I will miss every single one of you so much but you can sure expect to see me at future games! Thank you everyone for making my college volleyball career an experience never to forget. Good luck to you all and I love you!

#7 Kelsey Wirtanen
Hibbing, Minn. / Hibbing
Outside Hitter
Major: Biology, Pre-Physical Therapy

Words from Coach Phelps: Kelsey – you came in last year and were thrust into a starting roll on a team that was very different from your previous college program. Although your voice on the court was a little more quiet and reserved than we would've liked initially, your play spoke volumes. This year you have grown a great deal both as a player and a person. Thank you for realizing the importance your voice, however quiet, has on not only this team and program, but the community, classroom, etc. Hopefully your jumping, twirling, squealing defense won't transfer over to the younger classes, but the defensive determination and grit you brought will.
Words from Coach Benka: Kelsey, I will miss your crazy defense, strong arm, consistency, your fight, you mid-air jump digs, letting us hear you this year!

Kelsey's salute:
I first want to start by thanking my Dad and my Mom. Mom, thank you for sparking my interest in volleyball at such a young age. It has made a huge positive impact on my life and turned into something I love and could not live without. Thank you for the countless hours you have spent with me in the gym before, during, after practices and in the off season throughout my high school career. Being coached by a parent is something that only few people get to experience and I was so glad I got to share that experience with you as it has truly made me a better volleyball player.

Dad, thank you for your countless hours of driving me to and from practices, tournaments and games and for all the little things you have done for me not only in my volleyball career, but also concerning my academics. You have not only supported me and stood by my side in every decision I have made (whether you have agreed with it or not), but also have helped me make every big decision I have made thus far. I have felt so fortunate that you have been at every game and tournament you could be at no matter how many hours of driving it took to get there (not to mention the fact you live 207 miles away!). You have provided me with so much love and support throughout my volleyball and academic career and I am proud to say that I truly feel so blessed to have a father like you.
Mom and Dad, without your encouragement, support, dedication and love, I would not be where I am today.

Next, thank you to my family, especially to my grandparents David and Shirley, and Bill and Joan and to my sisters Courtney and Kailey. Grandpa David and Grandma Shirley, thank you for being at almost every game over the last two years and for brining treats almost every time! I think it is safe to say that the team and I have loved it! Grandpa Bill and Grandma Joan, thank you for making the long trip to watch some of my matches and tournaments and for watching online every game that you could not be at. I really have appreciated your love and support from all of you throughout my volleyball career! Courtney and Kailey, thank you for your support, willingness to listen when I need to vent and for obviously being such awesome sisters! I want to tell you to cherish the time you have left in your volleyball career because before you know it, it will come to an end.

Thank you to all of my former coaches and my current coaches Corey, Kim and Kayla. Without the help and support from every one of you I would not be the volleyball player or person I am today. Corey and Kim, thank you for all you guys have done for me over the past two years and for accepting me into your volleyball program as a transfer. You each made me feel so welcome and made my last two years of volleyball unforgettable. Corey, thank you for the countless hours spent with me before practices in the gym and for also helping me in my academic career. You have not only been an awesome volleyball coach, but a great mentor. I wish you both best of luck in your coaching career and hope to see many more successful St. Kate's volleyball seasons.

I also want to thank all of my former teammates and especially, my current teammates. Each and every one of you is awesome in your own ways and you guys have been awesome teammates. I want to tell you to cherish the time you have left with volleyball because it will be gone before you know it. Jordyn, Karsee, Ashley, Zoe and Marnie, we have had so many great memories over the past two years, and I will never forget them. Each of you are so positive and amazing, and I know you will be great leaders for the team next year.

A big thanks to my fellow seniors, Nicole, Britt, Ashley, Marie and Steph. Thank you for being so accepting of me and treating me like I was one of your own from the very beginning. Each of you has made my time here at St. Kate's so special and it is something I will truly never forget because of all of you.
Thank you to anyone I have not mentioned and to all of the fans for being so supporting and encouraging!

Lastly, good luck to Corey, Kim and my teammates in your upcoming seasons! Go Wildcats!
