Wildcat soccer holds off Gustavus in 1-0 shutout, records 9th win of season

In 2008, the St. Catherine University soccer team reached the nine-win mark with a 9-7-2 finish, setting a record for the most wins in a season since the program joined the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).

This season, in what has been a miraculous turnaround from a year ago, the Wildcats have showed signs of surpassing that mark. With a 1-0 shutout of Gustavus Adolphus College on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, the Wildcats equaled the nine-win total from four years ago as they improve to 9-7 with just one game remaining this season.

St. Catherine entered Wednesday's game with a 3-6 conference record which matched that of its opponent. However, the Wildcats were able to use a goal off the foot of sophomore Jennifer Goetz (Minneapolis, Minn.) to take an early 1-0 lead, which they would never surrender, and improve to 4-6 in conference play.

Goetz scored just outside the box on a shot that sailed just inside the left post past Gustie goalkeeper Jessica Reichert. The goal was Goetz' first of the season and her collegiate career. The defender now has one goal to add to her assist this season, bringing her point total to three.

Senior forward Christina Paik (Beaverton, Ore.), who has had a stellar senior campaign and leads the Wildcats with 14 points, led the Wildcat attack with four of the team's five shots on goal. Nina Bukowski (Two Harbors, Minn.) and Sarah Anderson (Marshalltown, Iowa) also had one shot a piece in the win.

Not only were the Wildcats impressive offensively, but first-year goalkeeper Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn.) continued to shine in net for the Wildcats as she stopped all seven Gustie shots. Mendez earned her eighth win of the season and fifth shutout, which is fifth among all MIAC goalkeepers.

The Wildcats wrap up their impressive season on Saturday, Oct. 27, against Hamline University, at 1 p.m. The home contest will also honor the four Wildcat seniors prior to the beginning of the game.
