Conference foe Bethel University defeated the Wildcat soccer team by a final score of 4-0 on Wednesday. Bethel only led 1-0 at the half, but several late goals by the Royals sealed the victory. The Wildcats fell to 1-9 (0-4 MIAC) while Bethel improved to 6-2-1 (2-2-0 MIAC).
The Wildcat defense almost completely stymied a pressing Bethel team in the first half. Bethel held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks and a 13-2 advantage in shots, yet just led 1-0 at halftime. Goalkeeper
Abbey Hinton and the rest of the Wildcat defense were able to turn away all of the Royals chances and keep themselves in the game.
After the half the Wildcat offense came out firing, holding a 9-8 shooting edge and earning three corner kicks to Bethel's two. Junior captain
Liesl Wolf led the offensive charge with three shots, while
Lensa Gurmessa,
Kristi Thorwick, and
Christina Paik each had two. The Wildcats were unable to connect on several golden opportunties and Bethel added three second half goals to deflate the WIldcats' hopes of scoring the equalizer.
The Wildcats will be on the road again on Saturday, taking on non-conference opponent Grinnell at 2 pm.
