In order to get ready for the ITA Regional Tournament this fall the Wildcat tennis team hosted the St. Kate's Invitational following their first week at school. The event was held at the Lakeville Lifetime Fitness and included conference rival Macalester, along with Augustana College and Upper Iowa University, who are two of the top teams from the the Division II NSIC conference. It was an outstanding day of high-level competition and the St. Kate's tennis team played extremely well in both singles and doubles.
Four of the freshmen who began on the team this fall were able to get their first wins as collegiate tennis players.
Maria Koval started the day winning a hard fought match in three sets in the #1 singles flight, but fell in the championship finals to a tough opponent from UIU.
Angie Lorenzen fell in an extremely close three set battled in the first round, but turned it around and won decisively in her second match.
April Fard and
Nora Bengel also bounced back extremely well from first round losses and claimed solid victories over their second round opponents.
Mackenzie Weber had a great tournament in the #3 singles flight with a convincing, well executed first round win and a good battle in the finals. In the #2 doubles flight
Angie Lorenzen and
Lauren Beadnell played outstanding doubles and fought from being well down in the set, but fell just short of the win at 9-7. Yet, they kept the momentum and won 8-1 in their next match.
Michaela Burroughs and
Maria Koval did the same at #1 doubles winning 8-1 in their second round match.
April Fard and
Mackenzie Weber fell in the finals, but really came out strong winning 8-2 in their first doubles match. Check out the link to see the full results of the day.
Overall, the Wildcats played very well throughout the day. We had a lot of good wins as a team, but since the tournament was filled with great competition, it allowed us to see what we need to do moving forward to make ourselves even better. It's been exciting to see how much the team has really dug in during practice this past week, so it will be fun to see how things go at the ITA Regional Tournament next weekend.
