Softball loses to St. Mary's

Cassie Rooney
Friday the Wildcats hosted the St. Mary's Cardinals, who had won five of their last six conference games coming into the doubleheader.

In the first game, both starting pitchers took care of business early, as neither team scored in the first three innings.

The top of the fourth St. Mary's scored three runs with two outs. The Wildcats would get on the board in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Jenna Brady, scoring Alyssa Luedtke. After a scoreless fourth inning the Cardinals would add one run in the fifth bringing the score to 4-1 SMU.

The Wildcats came alive in the sixth knocking in three runs and tying the score 4-4. That is how it stayed until the top of the eighth inning.

The Cardinals pulled away scoring four more runs in the eighth, which proved to be too much to overcome for the Wildcats.

St. Kate's scattered 13 hits and stranded eight runners en route to the 8-4 extra-inning loss.

Cassie Rooney went 3-4 (2 singles and a double) at the plate, with a run and an RBI.

Game two saw St. Kate's playing catch-up from the start. St. Mary's scored one in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth to jump out to a 6-2 lead.

In the seventh, SMU again put four on the board, and went on to pick up the 10-2 win.

The Wildcats are right back in action tomorrow as they travel to Hamline.
