The St. Kate's softball team opened play in the Tuscon Invitational with a pair of tough losses. The Wildcats fell in the late innings to #7 ranked Central College (IA) 6-1.
SCU started fast against Central, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter
Jessica Kniefel again used her speed to set the tone. After reaching on an error, she stole second.
Alyssa Luedtke singled, moving Kniefel to third. A wild pitch brought Kniefel home for the run.
The teams remained deadlocked until the bottom of the fourth when Central broke through. The Dutch put up four runs on the Wildcats, all unearned to take control of the game.
In their second game, St. Kate's fell behind Otterbein College (OH) early, and could not recover. St. Kate's 13-3 loss in five innings evened their record at 2-2 on the season.
The team returns to action on Sunday March 20 when they face UW-Eau Claire and Pacific University (OR)
