The Wildcats closed out their 2011 season with a victory, defeating Macalester 3-2. The win was their first conference road win this season and came against a feisty Macalester squad that proved tougher than expected. The Wildcats improved to 18-11 on the season, while Macalester fell to 6-23.
The Wildcats took control early, winning the first two sets, but Macalester stormed back to win the next two, before St. Kate's took care of business in the decisive fifth set. The Wildcats won 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 22-25, 15-8 as Macalester proved to be better than their record indicated coming in. The Wildcats were helped out by their serve, with 13 aces as a team, including six by
Marie O'Neil alone.
Kayla Sis was the go-to offensive player, racking up an amazing 18 kills, with only two errors, to hit an otherworldly .457.
Zoe Peterson hit .385 and had seven hills and one block assist. O'Neil had three blocks to go along with her many aces.
The Wildcats ended the year in seventh place in the MIAC, one spot out of the playoff field. "It was a great way to end our season, with our first conference road win," said Head Coach
Corey Phelps. "Even though we just missed the playoffs, we have had a season to be proud of and a lot to look forward to for next year."
