Soccer falls to Gustavus 2-1

Wednesday was a busy afternoon for the Wildcat soccer team, as they hosted Gustavus in a conference game.  The team wore pink jerseys and took donations in Kick for the Cure, their first annual breast cancer awareness fundraiser.  They also honored senior Kaitlin Kramer on Senior Day for all her hard work over four seasons at St. Kate's.  Gustavus spoiled the festive atmosphere at the game by handing the Wildcats a 2-1 loss in a tightly contested battle.

St. Kate's got on the board early, as they received a penalty kick on their first trip down the field.  Brianna Coulter's shot was as close as can be, as it bounced off the right post, but Lensa Gurmessa had the presence of mind to follow the shot in and kicked the rebound home to put the Wildcats up 1-0 less then a minute into play.

Gustavus evened the score several minutes later, as Amanda Cartony scored an unassisted goal at the 8:11 mark.  Cartony added a second goal in the 30th minute, giving Gustavus the winning score, as no goals were scored in the second half.  The Wildcats created plenty of chances for themselves, with 21 shots, most notably Kramer, who had seven shots and came oh-so-close to scoring a goal in her final home game. Goalie Jessica Richert made 11 saves to keep Gustavus ahead.  The game saw plenty of other action as well, with three yellow cards handed out in a 20 minute stretch during the second half.

The Wildcats head to Hamline on Saturday for a 1 PM kickoff in their final game of the season.
