On a night when they were honoring their seniors for all their contributions to the team, a trio of juniors helped lead the Wildcats past conference foe St. Olaf. After the Wildcats took a two set lead, the Oles tied it up by winning the third and fourth sets, before the Wildcats dominated play in the deciding fifth set. With the win, the Wildcats are now 17-9 overall, and 3-5 in MIAC play. The Oles fall to 10-13, 2-6 in the MIAC.
It was an emotional night for the four Wildcat seniors, playing their last match on their home court. After honoring
Kate Ellis,
Mallory Fultz,
Callie Teigen, and
Kayla Sis pregame, the junior class took over to help lift the team to the win. On a night that saw the Wildcat serve frustrate the Oles, the team compiled 15 aces. Nine of those came from
Marie O'Neil (five) and
Brittni Wangerin (four). Wangerin also had a team high 21 kills and 8 digs.
Kelsey Wirtanen had 17 kills while hitting a at a remarkable .448 percentage, and added 12 digs for good measure.
The Wildcats got on the board first, winning the first set 28-26 after holding off a late run by St. Olaf. They took the second set by two points as well, winning 25-23. The Oles flipped that score around in the third set, winning 25-23 after the Wildcats put together a late run of their own. After the Oles won the fourth set 25-20 to tie up the match, the Wildcats took their game to the next level in the fifth set, winning 15-8.
The Wildcats take to the road and hope to keep their conference playoff hopes alive when they face Bethel on Friday evening at 7 pm.
