Volleyball opens Stinger Classic with two wins

The Wildcat volleyball team headed to Superior, Wisconsin to take part in the 2011 Stinger Classic this weekend.  Day one saw plenty of positive results for the team, as they got back on track after a tough conference stretch and won their first two games of the weekend.  St. Kate's defeated Finlandia 3-0 and then defeated Augsburg 3-1.

The Wildcats took the first match against Finlandia in straight sets, winning 25-12, 25-13, 25-18.  Coach Phelps noted that the Finlandia match "got our team confidence back.  We were able to get a lot of people out on the court and get back into our rhythm out there.  That carried over into the Augsburg match, where we really passed well to help the offense come alive."

Playing back-to-back matches, the Wildcats headed out to see familir foe Augsburg in their second match, and the short break between matches actually helped the Wildcats today, as they came out firing in the first set and got a crucial first set victory.  Augsburg just edged them out in a close second set, before the Wildcats took care of business and won 3-1 with scores of 25-13, 24-26, 25-17, 25-23.  Kelsey Wirtanen had nine kills, three aces, and 17 digs to lead the Wildcats.

The team returns to the court Saturday morning, with a match against Lakehead at 10 am and UW-Superior at 2 pm.
