Soccer opens season with a win over Northwestern

The Wildcats got the 2010 season off on the right foot on Wednesday, defeating host Northwestern College 3-2 in the season opener.  Three different Wildcats scored in what was a total team effort and a quality first win.

St. Kate's got on the scoreboard early, as Kelsey Moll scored nine minutes into the game on an assist from Jamie Kelly.  Six minutes later they were back at it, as Kelly fed Kaitlin Kramer for a quick 2-0 lead.  Northwestern came back at the end of the half, with a goal by Heidi Anderson at the 31 minute mark and St. Kate's went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats kept up their tempo in the second period, and Kelsey Nistler made the score 3-1 just over 10 minutes into the half.  The Wildcats remained in control of the match for the remainder of play.  Rebekah Kirby scored a goal for the Eagles with 15 minutes remaining, but the final outcome was never in doubt as St. Kate's prevailed 3-2.

St. Kate's owned an 18-10 advantage in shots and goalkeeper Chelsea Jones-Thomas had seven saves.  Tara Hanson had eight saves for the Eagles.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, September 4th, visiting UW Lacrosse for a 4 PM contest.
