It was Senior and Parent Appreciation Day Saturday afternoon at the final home games of the season for the Wildcat softball team. Unfortunately, St. Kate's lost twice to Hamline as their late inning comeback fell short in game one and the offense could not get on track in game two. But for the Wildcat Seniors-- Jenna Clark, Beth Freier, Katie Allen, and Ann Schmitz --it was an afternoon to remember.
Hamline took an early 5-0 lead in game one, scoring two runs in the first and second inning and one run in the third inning. St. Kate's scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, started by a walk by Jenna Clark. Kaitlyn Frank singled to center field to move Clark over to second base. Clark then crossed home plate off of a Hamline throwing error.
After the Wildcats held the Pipers scoreless in the top of the seventh inning, their offense made the game interesting in the bottom of the inning. After Cassie Rooney reached base on a fielder's choice and Cassie Vennemann reached base on a single, Clark doubled to left field to close the score to 5-3. Katie Allen singled, bringing home Clark, to bring the score to 5-4. But the Pipers were able to retire the next batter to take the 5-4 win.
Eight Wildcat batters recorded hits in game one. Clark and Allen each had one hit and two RBI. Kayla Bergerson pitched all seven innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits and throwing 4 strikeouts.
St. Kate's got down early again in game two as Hamline scored two runs in the first inning. The Pipers scored a run in the fifth and three in the seventh to make the score 6-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. But there was to be no late inning comeback this game and Hamline recorded their second win of the day.
Pitcher Morgan Bohmbach threw six innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and recorded 5 strikeouts.
The Wildcats play their final doubleheader of the season at Northwestern College on Monday, May 3rd at 4:00 p.m.
