St. Kate's Goes Extra Innings With Macalester

Kayla Bergerson

The rain let up enough on Saturday afternoon for the St. Kate's softball team to go two extra-inning games with Macalester. The Scots won game one 4-3 in 8 innings, while the Wildcats took game two 4-1 in 9 innings.

The Wildcats took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Kelsey Luedtke singled to third and eventually scored off of a throwing error by the Scots. Katie Allen reached base on that throwing error and was later brought home by a single through the right side by Beth Freier.

After the Scots picked up a run in the bottom of the second, St. Kate's scored a run in the top of the sixth inning. Cassie Vennemann recorded the RBI after a ground out to the shortstop that scored Freier.

Unfortunately, that was all the Wildcats would score while Macalester scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the score and force an extra inning. The Scots ended up winning the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Luedtke and Freier each had two hits and one run. Freier also had a RBI.

St. Kate's showed their toughness in game two, bouncing back with a win in another extra inning game. The teams took a 1-1 tie into the top of the ninth inning, when the Wildcats exploded for 3 runs.

Kelsey Adair and Kaitlyn Frank each doubled and Luedtke singled to load the bases. Two runs scored off a single to center field by Jenna Clark. Later, Luedtke scored off of a groundout RBI by Kayla Bergerson. The three runs held up in the bottom of the inning and the Wildcats took the 4-1 win.

Bergerson pitched an impressive game, throwing all 9 innings, allowing only 1 run and 9 hits.

The Wildcats travel to the University of Wisconsin-Stout for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 25th at 2:00 p.m.
