The Wildcats won their third game in a row, defeating Gustavus 3-0 on Friday evening in an exciting conference match-up. With the win, the Wildcats are now 3-3 in MIAC play and 6-17 overall. The Gusties drop to 6-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
With the stands full of Wildcat fans, the team got off to a fast start, taking an early lead. The Gusties never threatened in the first set, as the Wildcats won 25-15. Gustavus made an early run in the second set, but with the Gusties leading 9-6, St. Kate's went on a six-point run on
Nicole Neumann's serve to take a 12-9 lead. The two teams see-sawed back and forth for the remainder of the game, with St. Kate's prevailing 25-22.
The third set was another close affair, with neither team willing to give way. Gustavus looked like they were going to force a fourth set when they led 24-21, but the Wildcats came back to tie it. The teams then traded points, as both squads scrambled for every loose ball and came up with some spectacular saves. Finally, with the crowd cheering them on, the Wildcats took the last two points on kills by
Stephanie Meschke.
Kayla Sis had 11 kills and one ace and Meschke had 8 kills and 2 aces. Neumann had 22 digs.
The Wildcats will try to make it four in a row as they head to St. Ben's on October 13th.
