The College of St. Catherine hockey team opened its 2007-08 season tonight when they hosted the University of Wisconson-River Falls at Ridder Arena.
The Wildcats enter this season with 13 first year players who were getting their first taste of college hockey tonight against a tough Falcon team. The Falcons showed their experience early, taking a 1-0 lead at the 7:09 mark of the first period on a goal by Chelsea Nelson. Jamie Brisk made it 2-0 less than two minutes later. At the 16:10 mark of the first period the Falcons got the third and final goal of the period.
The Wildcats defense began to tighten up in the second period and they played well throughout, surrendering a single goal to Jamie Brisk to make it 4-0.
In the third period the Falcons added their final goal at the 16:10 mark. At 17:46 of the third the Wildcats got their first goal of the new season on a shot by Kaytlyn Mount (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) with an assist from Jordan Nielsen (Jr., Willmar, Minn.), for the final score of 5-1.
Wildcat goalie Mel Gerten (Fy., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) had 44 saves in her first college game.
The Wildcats will be back in action next Saturday when they host UW-Concordia at 2:05.
