ST. PAUL, MINN. – It was an exciting weekend for the St. Catherine University track and field team at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Collegeville, Minnesota. No one may have had a better weekend, though, than Tori Thompson. The first year won the MIAC Championship in the long jump event in dramatic fashion to help the Wildcats take tenth by scoring 10 of the team’s 42 points. For her performance over the weekend, Thompson has been named this week’s Wildcat Athlete of the Week.

Coming into the meet, Thompson held the second best jump in the MIAC and top distance at St. Kate’s at 5.44 meters. After the preliminary rounds, Thompson was in fifth place but fell to ninth during the finals round.

With one jump remaining in the competition, Thompson made the leap of her collegiate career. The first year flew well over Augsburg’s Callie Jones’ mark of 5.56 meters to take first place. Thompson jumped 5.63 meters to take first place and crush the school record she set in late March.

Thompson also competed in discuss for St. Kate’s. She took tenth in that event with a throw of 34.73 meters. She will be one of several athletes competing in the Wildcats final meet of the 2016 season in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championship meet.

St. Kate’s finished in tenth place at the MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships thanks to Thompson’s strong performance. The team scored 42 points overall to finish seven points behind Macalester. The University of St. Thomas was the top team in the competition after scoring 191.3 points overall.
