The St. Catherine University basketball team came up with another big achievement this week as they improved to 6-3 on the season – the most win in a season since 2010-11 when the Wildcats went 6-19 overall. The young picked up a solid 68-60 non-conference win over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul Wednesday before falling 73-70 to the College of Saint Benedict in the final seconds Saturday. The Wildcats' success this week was due in large part to LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn./Humbolt) who has been named the Wildcat Athlete of the Week.Â
Holt had one of the biggest weeks in which she has had back-to-back-to-back games with 20-plus points – she also had 21 at Gustavus Adolphus College on Dec. 6 – of her career. Wednesday, Holt tied her career-high in scoring with 28 points against Northwestern. She also grabbed 12 rebounds for her third double-double in a row and fourth of the season. She was an impressive 12-of-19 from the floor including 8-of-11 in the second half. She completed her stat line with a team-high four steals, as well as four assists and two blocks.Â
The Wildcats narrowly lost to Saint Benedict Saturday and remained in the game until the final seconds thanks to Holt. She was clutch from the charity stripe going 12-for-12 from the line to contribute to her game-high 24 points. The sophomore tied the game at 70-70 on a strong 3-point shot with just 1:04 remaining to put the pressure on the Blazers in the final minute. Holt also had eight rebounds, a game-high five steals and two assists.Â
Currently, Holt leads the Wildcats ni scoring and rebounding with her 16.4 points per game ranking fourth in the MIAC. Her 21.0 ppg in MIAC contests is second in the league while she leads the league in rebounding overall (10.2 per game) and in MIAC games (12.0 per game). She also ranks sixth in assists per game (3.4) and seventh in steals per game (3.1).Â
Holt and the Wildcats are off through the holiday but return to action at home for a non-conference contest Tuesday, Dec. 30 against Concordia University Chicago. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in the Butler Center.Â
