In order for the St. Catherine University hockey team to be successful in 2014-15, it knew that top returners like Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) would need to start the season off on the right foot to lead the rest of the team to success. With a four-point weekend, its clear senior forward Killmer has just done that for the Wildcats. Thanks to her performance, she has been named the Wildcat Athlete-of-the-Week.Â
Over the course of two games, the Wildcats tallied four power play goals and Killmer played an important part in thre of the four. In a close 4-2 non-conference loss to the College of Saint Benedict Friday evening, Killmer helped set up both power play tallies for two assists in the game. On both goals, Killmer fed the puck to the top defender who shot the puck for a tip-in goal in front.Â
Carrying over the momentum from Friday, Killmer fueled the Wildcats' 4-1 non-conference win over UW-Eau Claire by tallying the first goal of the game and the first of her senior season at 6:57 of the first period when she skated the length of the ice to beat goalie Kim Van Brunt. Then, in the third period, Killmer struck again in response to a Blugold short-handed tally when she scored her second of the game at 15:51 on the power play. This was Killmer's first multi-goal game since recording a hat trick against St. Olaf College last February to secure the team's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) postseason birth.Â
With her four points this weekend, Killmer moves to No. 10 all-time at St. Kate's for career points (56) and No. 9 all-time for career assists (32). She is tied for the team lead in points so far this season with four.Â
Killmer and the rest of the Wildcats open up MIAC play Friday at home against Hamline University. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Drake Arena.Â
