The St. Catherine University golf team has opened its spring season with a strong start with impressive performances from multiple individuals. But this weekend was historic as the Wildcats claimed the first-ever tournament title in the three-year history of the program. First-year Abby Conzemius (Chanhassen, Minn.) led the way as she captured the program's first-ever indiviudal first-place finish. For her impressive weekend, Conzemius has been named the Wildcat Athlete of the Week.
At the end of the first round of the Bethel University Royal Match Friday, Conzemius led by one stroke heading into the final day with a score of 82. Then, she shot an 86 in cold, windy conditions Saturday to finish two strokes ahead of the next player from Bethel to claim her first collegiate tournament win with a two-day score of 168.
Conzemius finished as the top Wildcat finisher and beat out 35 other golfers to help the Wildcats take the top spot in thet eam standings by seven strokes. The first-year has led the Wildcats all season statistically and lowered her season average to 83.6 strokes per round. For two weeks in a row, Conzemius has turned in a round of 82 which is over a stroke below her average.
Conzemius and the rest of the Wildcats will wrap up their season Saturday and Sunday at the Macalester College Inivte at Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings, Minn.
