Despite suffering two tough Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) losses last week, sophomore Gabby Zehrer (Rogers, Minn.) had two dominant performances for the St. Catherine University basketball team as she averaged 16.5 points per game over the week to continue her stellar rookie year with the Wildcats. For her efforts, she has been named the Wildcat Athlete of the Week.Â
In the Wildcats' 80-53 loss to Carleton College Monday, Zehrer recorded a game-high 20 points in her 37 minutes played and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line. She also drilled three shots from 3-point range and had three rebounds, two assists and a steal.Â
On Wednesday, the Wildcats nearly upset St. Olaf College before falling 59-53 in the final 10 minutes. Zehrer led the Wildcats' scoring in the first half though with 11 and finished the game with a team-best 13 points. She also shot 33 percent from beyond the arc and added three rebounds, three assists and a block in her 35 minutes played.Â
So far this season, Zehrer has reached double-digits in scoring six times and her 15.7 points per game ranks fifth-best in the MIAC and 185th in Division III. She is also averaging 30.0 minutes per game which is 10th most in the MIAC. The guard is shooting 28.4 percent from the field and averages 3.7 rebounds per game.Â
Zehrer and the Wildcats return to action after the semester break against Augsburg College on Saturday, Jan. 4. Tip off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis.Â
