The St. Catherine University swimming and diving team had a great weekend of career performances and season-bests in both of its home meets – led by a strong group of seniors who were honored Friday evening. Though it took a team effort to defeat Augsburg and Macalester on Friday night and finish second at the St. Kate's Invite on Saturday, senior Alli Witt (La Crescent, Minn.) had a standout weekend for the Wildcats – earning her the Wildcat Athlete of the Week honor.
Witt kicked off her weekend in a big way as she used a career best time of 25.53 to win the 50 Freestlye on Friday night. She then finished second in the 500 Freestyle less than a tenth of a second behind teammate Haley French Krahn (Rochester, Minn.) with a time of 5:43.12 which was just .12 seconds off her career best.
After a stellar senior night, Witt was even more impressive at the grueling St. Kate's Invite, Saturday. Her meet highlight was winning the 200 IM with a season-best time 2:17.51. The senior also had a second-place swim in the 200 Freeestyle, a third-place finish in the 100 Freestyle and swam the anchor leg of the 200 Medley Relay team that finished first for the Wildcats.
Witt and the Wildcats will take a few weeks off in preapration for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships – except for some swimmers and divers who will compete this weekend at the University of St. Thomas. The MIAC meet will be held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, Feb. 14-16. Prelim heats will take place at 10:30 a.m. each day and finals start at 6 p.m. each evening.
