After falling to host school Alverno College on Saturday at the Women's College Tipoff Tournament, the St. Catherine University basketball team rebounded with a huge 58-55 comeback win over Stephens College, Sunday, to open the 2012-13 season 1-1. Sophomore Sarah Mong (Page, Ariz.) led the team's late-game offensive strike, earning her Wildcat Athlete of the Week honors.
With just 5:41 to play in the game, the Wildcats were down 50-39 to Stephens when Mong used a layup to spark a 14-3 Wildcat run to tie the game with 1:21 to play. Mong scored the game-tying basket and would then add five more to put her team ahead in the final stretch.
Mong scored 14 of the Wildcats' final 19 points and led all players in the game in scoring with 23 points. She was named to the All-Tournament Team after she helped erase a 13-point deficit en route to the first wildcat victory of the season. Mong was 7-for-13 in the game and helped lead the Wildcats to 65 percent shooting in the second half. She also added nine rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win.
Mong and the Wildcats open up conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 28, against Carleton College at the Butler Center. Tipoff is scheudled for 7:30 p.m.
