As the 2012 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) volleyball season winds down, Wildcat senior Brittni Wangerin has continued to put up big numbers to lead the St. Catherine volleyball team. This week, she led the team with 26 kills in two MIAC losses and recorded her 1,000th career kill versus Bethel. For her performance, she has been named the Wildcat Athlete of the Week.
In the week's first match, Wangerin had the second-highest kill total against St. Olaf as she racked up 11. She also chipped in 17 digs and two aces against the Oles. Heading into the team's second match of the week against Bethel, Wangerin needed 15 kills to join the 1,000-kill club. In a five-set heartbreaking loss, Wangerin used 17 kills to surpass the mark and lead all hitters in the match. She also chipped in 17 digs, one ace and one block assist.
Wangerin leads the Wildcats in hitting this season with 291 kills and a 3.03 kill per set average. Her kill total is fourth-best in the MIAC and she is also the third-best server in the conference with 0.43 aces per set. Her 41 aces ranks fifth in the MIAC. Defensively, Wangerin has 316 digs this year, which brings her career total to 1,038. Wangerin joined the 1,000-digs club last week at the UW-Platteville Tournament, along with senior libero Nicole Pothen.
Wangerin and the Wildcats close out their regular season at home with matches against Gustavus and Macalester. The Gusties come to town for a Wednesday night match beginning at 7 p.m., before the Scots travel across town to take on the Wildcats on senior night, Friday at 7 p.m.
